With the amazing improvements in health care, life expectancy has risen dramatically. Illnesses for which there were no cures 100 years ago are now cured by miracle drugs, and often without a hospital stay. We are living longer, healthier lives. But eventually old age catches up to everyone.
If you or someone you love is facing the prospect of needing care on a daily basis, whether it be skilled nursing care or just a little assistance with the activities of daily living, help is available. The State Office for the Aging (SOFA) and the State Health Department (DOH) have teamed up to streamline access to information about long term care with a new initiative called NY Connects.
The NY Connects website (www.nyconnects.org) has a wealth of information about nursing homes, adult homes, assisted living facilities, Alzheimer’s Disease, long term care insurance, home care, tax assistance, senior transportation, respite, adult day care -- just about anything a caregiver or senior facing these issues would want to know. You can also find detailed information on different types of health care facilities in your own county.
If you or someone you love is facing long term care issues and you don’t know where to turn, I would urge you to check out www.nyconnects.org. For more information, call the Dutchess County Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555 or the Columbia County Office for the Aging at 518-828-4258.To go directly to the NY Connects website, click here: www.nyconnects.org
